Captured servicemen are no longer able to make calls from Ukraine, since the provisions of the Geneva Convention on prisoners of war only allow correspondence.

The Commissioner for Human Rights of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Dmytro Lubinets, announced this on the air of the telethon on Sunday, September 8.

The Ombudsman emphasized that human rights, humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention, which establishes the rules and customs of war, are important for Ukraine. Within the framework of these norms, Ukraine decided to deny Russian prisoners the opportunity to make phone calls.

"Unfortunately or fortunately, we cannot behave the way the Russians do... And we realize this. Frankly, we have changed some things. For example, there was a lot of discussion about the possibility of Russian prisoners of war calling their relatives on Russian territory," Dmytro Lubinets noted.

The reason for this decision was the frequent cases of cruel treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russia. As Lubinets reported, the actions of the Russians were recorded as a violation of the Geneva Convention.

Lubinets passes letters from Russian prisoners of war to Russian Ombudsman Tetyana Moskalkova. In addition, the Human Rights Commissioner receives letters from Ukrainian prisoners of war.
