US Senate approved a bill to assist Ukraine

The US Senate today, April 23 (April 24 – Kyiv time), approved a bill to provide assistance to Ukraine. Now the document must be signed by US President Joe Biden.

This became known fromthe broadcast of the vote in the US Senate.

During the voting for the bill providing for the provision of $61 billion in aid to Ukraine, 79 senators voted in favor in the final.

18 senators spoke against it.

What the US has provided help to Ukraine

This bill provides for the allocation of funds to help Ukraine totaling more than $60 billion. In particular, $49.9 billion is provided for defense spending, $1.57 billion will be allocated for economic assistance and another $400 million for border protection and humanitarian demining.

At the same time, the bill provides $7.8 billion in direct budget support, but this money will be provided as a loan. Its terms will be determined by a separate agreement.

RBC-Ukraine has already reported that this loan may be written off in the future. The President of the United States will have such powers, but after the elections on November 5, 2024.

The bill is expected to be signed immediately by the US President. After this, Washington should provide Ukraine with a new package of military assistance as soon as possible.

What could be in the new US aid package?

The other day it became known that this time the administration of American President Joe Biden is preparing a larger package of military assistance to Ukraine than usual.

The new aid to Ukraine is expected to include armored vehicles to complement urgently needed artillery and air defense systems.

According to Western media reports, the package will contain:

  • Bradley fighting vehicles;
  • "Humvees";
  • M113 armored personnel carriers;
  • artillery;
  • air defense systems;
  • rockets.

Ukraine may also receive ATACMS long-range missiles.
