Nuclear safety situation at Zaporizhzhya NPP is deteriorating, - IAEA

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated that the nuclear safety situation at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) is currently deteriorating due to a drone strike, the IAEA website reports.

"We are seeing an escalation of threats to nuclear safety and the security of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. I remain extremely concerned and reiterate my call for maximum restraint on all sides and for strict compliance with the five specific principles established to protect the plant," said the agency’s director general, Rafael Grossi.

The IAEA noted that they were informed that explosives, allegedly carried by a drone, detonated just outside the plant’s security zone. The impact site was near cooling water ponds and about 100 meters from the Dnipro power line, the only line that supplies power to Zaporizhzhya NPP.

Ukrainian official institutions, including Energoatom, have not yet commented on the situation.
