The UK will provide 650 Light Multirole Missiles (LMM) under a £162 million (around $213 million) contract to bolster Ukraine’s air defences.

This was reported in a press release from the UK Ministry of Defence.

It is noted that the aid package will be announced today by the head of the British Defence Department, John Healey, at a meeting of the Contact Group on the Defence of Ukraine, which is taking place at the US Air Force base in Ramstein.

The air defence missiles were announced following a bilateral meeting between Healey and Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov in London earlier this week to discuss further UK support in the coming months. During the meeting, the UK minister confirmed that £300m worth of artillery ammunition would begin to arrive in Ukraine by the end of 2024.

In line with the new government’s commitment to speed up aid delivery, the first batch of LMM missiles is also expected before the end of this year.

"In recent days we have seen the tragic consequences of Russia’s indiscriminate attacks on Poltava and Lviv. These new British-made missiles will help Ukraine defend its people, infrastructure and territory from Putin’s brutal attacks," Healey said.

The LMM missiles, manufactured by Thales at its Belfast facility, are highly versatile and can be launched from a variety of platforms on land, sea and in the air.

The press release notes that the package is financed primarily by UK financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of £3 billion per year, as well as contributions from Norway through the International Fund for Ukraine.

As reported by Ukrinform, on September 4, during a visit to Great Britain, Umyerov called on partners and allies to speed up the supply of critically needed weapons to protect Ukraine from terrorist attacks by the Russian Federation.
