MEDIA: "Ukrzaliznytsia loses billions due to mismanagement and dubious schemes

According to the results of the first half of the year, Ukrzaliznytsia received a profit of UAH 3.1 billion, and its income from freight transportation amounted to UAH 43 billion, showing an increase of UAH 6.5 billion. But, oddly enough, the company showed a drop in profits by UAH 1.7 billion. Therefore, the management of UZ has already started talking about the need to increase the tariff for freight transportation.

At the same time, according to the general director of the Federation of Transport Employers of Ukraine (FRTU), Volodymyr Husak, interviewed by the publication, in order to solve the “riddle” of which UZ is losing funds, it is necessary to carefully understand the economic activities of Ukrzaliznytsia.

“As evidenced by many years of experience working with Ukrzaliznytsia, the company, unfortunately, does not have operational efficiency as a priority. This was also reflected in the drop in profits. It would be nice, for example, to see what the current diesel fuel consumption standards are at Ukrzaliznytsia. After all, just a few years ago, the specific consumption rate of diesel fuel in Ukraine was twice as high as, say, in Kazakhstan,” he says.

At the same time, according to the official report of Ukrzaliznytsia, the company’s costs this year are less than last year. In particular, purchase prices for fuel in the first half of the year were lower by 3%, and the purchase price for gas fell by 35%. UZ spent only 4.5 billion UAH on capital investments, which is 2.1 billion less than for the same period in 2023. But the company reported an increase in operating expenses – by UAH 2.6 billion, to UAH 4.6 billion.
