Russians are destroying the ecosystem of the Azov-Black Sea region - Navy
The Ukrainian Navy commented on the accident involving two Russian tankers, "Volgoneft-212" and "Volgoneft-239," carrying oil products in the Kerch Strait on December 15.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Navy on Facebook.
"The Russian Federation has once again caused significant damage to the ecosystems of the Azov-Black Sea region and the temporarily occupied Crimea," the statement reads.
As noted by the Navy, "while the occupation authorities are trying to organize a rescue operation with their ’shadow fleet’ vessels, which are over half a century old, oil products are freely flowing into the open sea. It is known, in particular, that ’Volgoneft 212’ had over 4,000 tons of fuel oil on board."
The Navy recalled that "this is already the second incident where a tanker from the ’Kama Shipping’ company sinks due to hull failure. The previous one was the ’Volgoneft-139’ tanker - in November 2007, it sank within minutes during anchorage."
In both cases, waves hit the hull, creating a breach, followed by a crack, and the tanker split into two parts and sank.
"Hoping for impunity and a weak reaction from international organizations to the invaders’ crimes, the Russians continue to pose threats to navigation and bring death to ecosystems on the territories they occupy," the Navy states.
